About Khon by Pichet Klunchun Dance Company

Pichet Klunchun (Thailand)

Pichet Klunchun bridges traditional Thai classical dance language with contemporary sensibility, while keeping the heart and wisdom of the convention. He trained in the Thai classical mask dance, Khon, from age 16 with Chaiyot Khummanee, one of the best Khon masters in Thailand, and has a degree in Thai classical dance from Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok. He became a dancer and choreographer in major productions, including the opening and closing ceremonies of the 1998 Asian Games in Bangkok. He later pursued his interest in contemporary dance and earned domestic notoriety for his efforts in contemporising Khon. Founder and artistic director of Pichet Klunchun Dance Company he is known for his intercultural projects in Asia and Europe, characterised by his innate sensitivity and understanding. He received the first-ever European Cultural Foundation Routes Princess Margriet Award for Cultural Diversity in 2008. The award honours artists and thinkers for their contribution to an affirmative understanding of cultural diversity, and for helping to combat fear and disrespect of the ‘other’.

Personally Speaking..

How would you describe your philosophy in art making?
Art should be able to add value and be beneficial to society, to the art itself and to our knowledge.

Who or what was the biggest influence on your decision to become an artist and subsequent artistic development?
I have never identified myself as artist. I also have no idea what it means when people who work with art claim that they are ?artists. I am doing what I am doing now because I am happy with what I am doing and I am happy when I am dancing. I feel that I want to leave my legacy and knowledge of dance for the future generation. I can?t answer this question because I dont know the answer.

What inspires or motivates you in your creative pursuits?
The hunger for knowledge and learning new things and my views toward unjust situations in the society.

What do you love most about creating art?
The chance to see and feel my emotions in unusual circumstances.

What is your favourite quote (or book, song, artwork, film, etc) that reflects your views on life?
None. My life is not stable yet and can?t be clearly defined. My life has just started.
