Personally Speaking..

How would you describe your philosophy or approach in art making?
I have a wanderlust…a dance-lust!! I love to travel through my body and my mind, and to let these parts travel through different parts of space, to explore new places, new routes, divergent avenues. Is it possible to watch the space within oneself, just as you watch the space outside?

Who or what was the biggest influence on your decision to become an artist and subsequent artistic development?
I started dancing at too young an age to have logically decided why I was doing so! Life itself has been my biggest motivation along with a family that encouraged free and fearless thinking. Unlike most classical Indian performers, I don't belong to a family of dancers. My family has business people on one side, and intellectuals of philosophy and the sciences on the other. But my desire to dance and create dance was born out of an atmosphere of freedom, an ambience in which ideas and imagination were encouraged to flow and flower.

I first started studying dance with Shrimati Kumudini Lakhia, one of the pioneers of contemporary innovations based on Kathak and among India’s leading choreographers. I learnt from her the essence of dance, the ability to understand the relation of my body to the space that surrounds me. From my second guru, Shri Birju Maharaj, the scion of the traditional Kathak family and India's greatest Kathak maestro, I learnt to love dance as though it were human, to feel its all-encompassing beauty, to centre myself within my body. But the greatest teacher is life itself and more so how one learns from it, from one’s experiences and how that gets transformed into movement.

What inspires or motivates you in your creative pursuits?
I love challenges. I love to walk that extra bit that may be non-negotiable! I seek to challenge established norms and develop the courage to dance my own dance, while at the same time being informed about the heritage, culture, influences and language of other dance styles and forms, viewpoints and ideas. To be inclusive…not to be compartmentalised.

What do you love most about creating art?
Abandon. Freedom. Love. Challenges. Risks. Beauty. To feel at times ‘full’.

What is your favourite quote that reflects your views on life?
I’m inspired by life…so can’t think of one single quote but maybe read the philosopher J. Krishnamurti.
