What is ConversAsians?

ConversAsians is a biennial event that celebrates and explores the creative journeys of artists in the Asian performing arts scene. From established masters to the rising stars of the younger generation, featured are creators from across disciplines who have proven exceptional and inspirational through innovation and distinction.

Departing from the regular arts mart, the focus has shifted to appreciating and engaging them in more meaningful ways. A fully immersive event into the diverse arts and cultures of Asia Pacific, ConversAsians aims to foster a platform of trust and exchange between artists and delegates, to encourage more artistic expressions and create more opportunities across borders.

Through a series of talks, workshops, and presentations of works-in-progress, performance excerpts and full-length productions, delegates stand to understand their creative process as they share their stories and personal perspectives on art and life.

Targeted at producers, presenters, artistic directors, curators, artists, arts students, or anyone in the related field with a keen interest in the development of the Asian arts scene, interact with artists and participate in stimulating dialogue sessions, discussions and interviews facilitated by other arts professionals.

How did the name come about?

Started by Esplanade in 2001 as Asian Arts Mart, the intent was to promote Asian artists to the international arts community whilst providing a platform for them and art professionals to exchange, network and find business opportunities. However, with several other arts marts happening around the region sharing similar visions, a bold impetus was needed in the industry to look beyond commercial value and get to the heart of what is important, via the creators.

The name ConversAsians was chosen to reflect the personal nature of getting to know someone through communication. This is the essence of engagement, in which arts practitioners can discuss pertinent topics that are personal, share perspectives on art and life, and be invigorated by heartening stories of experiences that shape our arts and culture.

Why ConversAsians?

This new event grounds a more purposeful understanding of the arts from different standpoints in and around the region. Communicating intangible thought and creative ideas put through tangible presentations and live discussions, ConversAsians advocates the support for artists, where, in doing so, inspiration begets innovation, so developing the Asian performing arts scene.

After three days of getting closer to the arts, delegates will leave rejuvenated and with a renewed sense of meaning and purpose to how they can make a difference to the industry.
